Capturing our impact

Restoring the balance

At Earth, we believe a business’s impact on people and planet is as much a part of its brand as its logo is. We were one of the first creative strategy consultancies to put this belief into practice and have been embedding sustainability and social impact into the DNA of the brands we have worked with ever since.

For the past 12 years, this has informed everything we do: how we develop brands, who we work with, and how we operate internally.

Making an impact

Our clients come from across the economy, but they have one thing in common - they have a vision of sustainability that needs to be unleashed.

We help them do this. By curating a bespoke experience for each client we work with, we give them the specific creative tools to make sustainability intrinsic to their business. And it’s working.

We focus is on supporting our clients in three distinct ways: mitigating their environmental impacts, creating social value enhancing economic prosperity

Our forest

In 2021, we put our own process into practice and started the beginnings of our Earth forest. Based in Northern France, in the Luthany forest we purchased 200 trees - and it’s continually growing.

Why a forest? These trees encourage biodiversity and create a carbon sink - between 10kg and 30kg of carbon every year.

Every year as we grow our forest grows and so does the growth in our Carbon sequestering ability. We’ve committed to a minimum of 1200 trees by 2024 - because our vision for the future keeps getting bigger.

Carbon sinking

Sinking carbon isn’t just a choice - it’s a business vision, that we integrate into every part of what we do. We don’t just care about our own direct emissions, we are tracking our full range of impacts. We are already capturing our full range of on-site and energy/heat-related Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and we are working towards sinking all of our Scope 3 emissions from commuting to visiting our clients.

Our carbon-sinking journey starts in our office and stretches all the way to our Earth forest. The trees we protect absorb around 4000kg of CO2 every year.

Our Emissions

All of our office-based emissions are sequestered by our forest, as is the carbon we emit visiting clients - thanks to Electric Taxi rides which minimise our client visit carbon, and reigning in the drives and tubes makes a dent too. Plus, we have First Mile Silver status for recycling.
But we’re just getting started. As our forest grows and emissions recede, we’re aiming for carbon-neutral and settling for nothing less.

Hosting Our Emissions Clients

Hosting

We currently host over 30 websites for our clients. We have calculated the emissions associated with the running of the servers we manage. We have allocated a number of our trees annually to sync the carbon we emit hosting our websites and as the number of websites grows, so will the number of trees we own.

Our Emissions

It’s not just about talking the talk - we walk the walk too. All of our office-based emissions are sequestered by our forest, as is the carbon we emit visiting clients - thanks to Electric Taxi rides minimise our client visit carbon, and reigning in the drives and tubes makes a dent too. Plus, we have First Mile SIlver status for recycling.

Clients

The remaining trees in our forest are thanks to our clients. While we are supporting them to deliver sustainability and social impact, we want to demonstrate how their decision to work with us has a positive impact on the planet too. For every project we begin, whether with a new client or an old client, we grow our forest based on the size of the project. The bigger the project, the more trees we buy.

Here at earth, our team is working towards net zero. We’re all making changes to minimise our individual footprints. From reducing the days we are in the office and our resulting commuting miles, to how we host the websites we manage, we are striving to limit our carbon footprint in everything we do.

Biodiversity

Sustainability is like a domino. When you get it right, it hits everything else.

The impact our Earth forest is having continues to multiply. Those 200 Sessile Oak trees in Burgundy have created a whole ecosystem, and biodiversity is booming.

This is as much a part of our contribution as the work we do with our clients. Wild boars create habitat conditions for smaller mammals, and spread plant seed and hypogenous fungi. Roe deer shape the forest landscape and manage plantlife in competition with tree sprouts. Seed predation and food sources feed into each other, multiplying our impact across this natural landscape, and feeding into sustainable economics.

Our supply chain

Our supply chain is transparent and accountable. All materials that we source for internal use and for our client projects minimise environmental impact. All our suppliers are FSC accredited and are fully compliant with ISO 140001.
